Vibrationally inelastic scattering of high- n Rydberg H atoms from N2 and O2.

چکیده
The vibrationally inelastic scattering of Rydberg H atoms (n = 30-50) from N2 and O2 at E(coll) = 1.84 eV was studied as a function of laboratory deflection angle. On average, 4 times more vibrational excitation was observed in collisions with O2 than with N2. Vibrational excitation of O2 results largely from collisions in which an electron is briefly transferred from O2 to the proton core, while the Rydberg electron remains a spectator. This provides further evidence that the free electron model applies to low energy collisions involving the ionic core leading to substantial momentum transfer.

State-to-state dynamics of high-n Rydberg H-atom scattering with H2: inelastic scattering and reactive scattering.
The state-to-state dynamics of high-n Rydberg H-atom scattering with para-H2 at the collision energies of 0.45 and 1.07 eV have been studied using the H-atom Rydberg tagging time-of-flight technique. Both the inelastic scattering and reactive scattering are observed in the experimental time-of-flight spectra. The products H2(v', j' = odd) come only from reactive scattering and present clearly f...
متن کاملUltracold Chemical Reactions of a Single Rydberg Atom in a Dense Gas
Within a dense environment (ρ ≈ 10 atoms=cm) at ultracold temperatures (T < 1 μK), a single atom excited to a Rydberg state acts as a reaction center for surrounding neutral atoms. At these temperatures, almost all neutral atoms within the Rydberg orbit are bound to the Rydberg core and interact with the Rydberg atom. We have studied the reaction rate and products for nS Rb Rydberg states, and ...
متن کاملAtomic Rydberg reservoirs for polar molecules.
We discuss laser-dressed dipolar and van der Waals interactions between atoms and polar molecules, so that a cold atomic gas with laser admixed Rydberg levels acts as a designed reservoir for both elastic and inelastic collisional processes. The elastic scattering channel is characterized by large elastic scattering cross sections and repulsive shields to protect from close encounter collisions...
متن کاملSpatial quantum beats in vibrational resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering at dissociating states in oxygen.
Resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra excited at the 1σ(g) → 3σ(u) resonance in gas-phase O2 show excitations due to the nuclear degrees of freedom with up to 35 well-resolved discrete vibronic states and a continuum due to the kinetic energy distribution of the separated atoms. The RIXS profile demonstrates spatial quantum beats caused by two interfering wave packets with dif...
متن کاملVibrationally inelastic H + D2 collisions are forward-scattered.
We have measured differential cross sections (DCSs) for the vibrationally inelastic scattering process H + o-D(2)(v = 0, j = 0,2) --> H + o-D(2)(v' = 1-4, j' even). Several different collision energies and nearly the entire range of populated product quantum states are studied. The products are dominantly forward-scattered in all cases. This behavior is the opposite of what is predicted by the ...
